Busting Worry and Anxiety

You’ve probably heard it said that the phrase “Do not fear” is in the Bible 365 times–one for every day of the year. While it’s a cute thing to post on social media (most of us are guilty!), it’s not exactly true–it’s maybe closer to 150. But that is still a whole lot of times we are instructed to NOT be afraid! I will say, though, that if you start to add in all the verses that speak about giving up your anxieties, not worrying, and trusting in the Lord, you’re probably easily over that 365.

God does not want you walking in fear, anxiety, or worry. Point blank period. Why? Because it’s a sin? Because He’ll be mad at you if you do? No. Because it hurts you. God wants to protect you.

So although most of us have touted the Lord’s instruction to not be afraid every day of the year, how many of us are honest about whether we live that out? How many of us even TRY to live that out?

This topic gets a lot of lip service & not a whole lot of *thought* service. I’ll explain.

We talk about not having to be afraid as born again believers because God is on our side. But then our language is overflowing with the opposite. We often begin our sentences with, “I’m worried,” “I’m concerned,” “I’m afraid.” Matthew 12:34 says, “Whatever is in your heart determines what you say.”

So when we start our sentences this way, it should be an indicator to us that we don’t truly believe that God works all things for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) If we did, why on earth would we start a sentence that way?

All fear/anxiety/worry is ultimately rooted in a lack of faith or understanding in who God is and the promise you have received as His heir. At the core, it is rooted in the lie that God does not have your best interest at heart, and He cannot be trusted.

So, since we’ve now exposed the lie, let’s dig it up and throw it away! And let’s plant the truth in its stead.

Here are some powerful fear, worry, & anxiety-busting scriptures that, if you let them, will grow in your spirit until your faith is so strong it will choke out any fear-filled lie that tries to crop up in the future.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.-James 1:2-4

“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!”-Psalms 46:1-3

“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”-Isaiah 41:13

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.”-Psalm 23:4

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?-Psalms 56:3-4

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.”-Psalm 34:4–5

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.-Philippians 4:6-7

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble.

I will rescue and honor them.”-Psalms 91:14-15
